ABOUT THE COLOR TABLE

In Lesson Nine we learned that color codes must be given as hexadecimal numbers in the form "#RRGGBB" where RR represents the intensity of red, GG the intensity of green and BB the intensity of blue. Each intensity is a hexadecimal number from Hex 00 to Hex FF (= Dec 00 to Dec 255 = 256 intensities for each color). When using color codes in your HTML documents, you must have the # symbol in front of the color code and the whole code must be enclosed within quotation marks. Below is a table giving various colors and their corresponding codes. Since there are over 16 million color codes, this table shows a cross sampling through all the codes. The table gives color intensities as multiples of Hex 33 (= Dec 51). These multiples are HEX 00, 33, 66, 99, CC, and FF or 6 intensities of each color. Thus we have 6 x 6 x 6 = 216 color codes in the table. You can use values other than those in the table and I did just that with the last two rows using the color code "#800000" along with a few variations and other color codes. So you can use any legal code you like. However, most browsers cannot distinguish all these millions of color shades. For example, there are many codes that are so close to red that the browser will simply round off to the red color code in the table. So if you give it a code whose shade the browser cannot distinguish, it will "round off" to the nearest color in the table or one that it can distinguish.

If you do not see any colors in the table given below, click here to see all the codes and their colors in a series of images.

You use these color codes to change the background color, the full page text color, blocks of text, links, active links and visited links. All of these except for changing blocks or portions of text, are done as BODY attributes. For example,

<BODY BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF" TEXT="#FF0000" LINK="#00FF00" ALINK="#0000FF" VLINK="#FF00FF">

gives a WHITE background, RED text, GREEN (lime) links, BLUE activated links, and MAGENTA visited links. See Lesson Nine if you need to review the meanings of these attributes. Note that the "0" in the codes is the number "0" and not the letter "O".

To change only a block of text, use the FONT tag with the COLOR attribute as in:

<FONT COLOR="#CC99FF">text text text</FONT>

where #CC99FF represents the color code. The closing FONT tag, (</FONT>), restores the previous text color.
